What You Need to Know and Do Before Your Big Move

Our team at Blue Men Moving is more than happy to help you with your upcoming move. Feel free to read the tips our professional team has provided below so that you can be well prepared for your upcoming relocation.

One Month Before the Move

  1. Set a date for the big move, and then call Blue Men Moving, so we can reserve the day.
  2. If you are moving out of or into an apartment, which requires an elevator, inform your building administrator that you need to use the elevator on the day of your move.
  3. Start packing the nonessential items – the things that you are not going to need until after the move, which are usually in the garage, attic, and basement. You can also hire our team at Blue Men Moving to help you with packing.
  4. Remember to save your last credit card bills, account statements, magazine subscriptions, and utility bills. These documents contain important phone numbers and account information that may be helpful when you change your address.
  5. Start thinking about how your furniture will fit in the new house by taking measurements and making a diagram. With that, you can tell our movers exactly where you would like each item to be placed. Doing so will save you time and money on the day of the move.

One Week Before the Move

  1. Cancel your local paper or change the address.
  2. File a change of address at your local postal service.
  3. Notify all financial accounts of your move. These include banks, credit cards, and brokerages, such as your 401k, personal stocks/mutual funds, and other investments. Make a list and call or write to them about your new address.

Three Days Before the Move

  1. Finish packing your day-to-day or more essential items.
  2. Make a collection of valuables that you will take with you in your car, such as passports, jewelry, cash, house deeds, and other important documents.
  3. Pack each member of the family a personal box or suitcase with their essential items for the next few days and then move it yourself. You can also have our movers put them in a place where they are easily accessible.
  4. Unhook appliances and take apart furniture that requires disassembly, such as mirrors from dressers, beds, and corner desks that cannot be moved in one piece.

The Day of the Move

  1. Empty your refrigerators and freezers.
  2. Inform the movers of any boxes or furniture, which require extra care when being handled.
  3. Inform the movers of any essential items that need to be loaded at the back of the truck so that they will be the first items to be unloaded.
  4. Be accessible to answer any questions the movers may have – after all, the less time they spend looking for you, the more money you will save.
  5. During loading, be prepared to answer questions concerning items to be moved compared to the things that will stay.
  6. During unloading, be prepared to answer questions concerning where you would like boxes to be placed and furniture positioned.
  7. Feel relaxed knowing that your belongings are in the hands of experienced professionals.
