A full-size upright can weigh between 400 and 900 pounds, and a concert grand can exceed 1,000 pounds, with that weight distributed in ways that make standard moving equipment and techniques inadequate and potentially damaging. Beyond the weight, the internal components including strings, hammers, soundboards, and pedal mechanisms are sensitive to impact and improper handling in ways that can affect the instrument’s tuning, tone, and playability long after the move is complete. In most cases, yes. Even a professionally executed piano move will typically affect the instrument’s tuning due to changes in temperature, humidity, and the physical movement of the instrument itself. We always recommend scheduling a tuning with a qualified piano technician after your piano has had a few days to acclimate to its new environment. Yes. Staircase moves and tight corner navigation are situations our piano movers are specifically trained and equipped to handle. Grand piano moves involving stairs require disassembly of the piano’s legs and pedal lyre, careful wrapping of the lid and body, and the use of a piano skid board to safely control the instrument on the staircase. We assess these access challenges before your move date and arrive with everything needed to execute the move safely and correctly. We never attempt to force a piano through an access point that is not adequate for it, and if a particularly challenging situation requires additional equipment or crew members, we identify that in advance rather than on the day of the move.

We recommend reaching out at least 3 to 4 weeks before your target move date for most piano relocations. For grand piano moves involving complex access situations, multiple flights of stairs, or very large instruments, giving us 5 to 6 weeks allows adequate time to assess your specific situation and prepare the right equipment and crew for the job. During peak moving season from May through September, earlier booking is always advisable as our schedule fills up quickly throughout the Columbus metro area.
